Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope announced the discovery of JADES-GS-z14-0, a galaxy that existed approximately 290 million years after the Big Bang — making it the oldest galaxy ever observed by a significant margin. The previous record holder dated to 325 million years post-Big Bang.
Why This Discovery Is Remarkable
JADES-GS-z14-0 is not only old but surprisingly large and bright. Standard models of galaxy formation predict that galaxies at this epoch should be small, dim, and metal-poor. This galaxy breaks all three assumptions — its existence challenges theorists to rethink how quickly structure formed in the early universe.
- Size: ~1,600 light-years across — far larger than predicted for its age
- Star mass: equivalent to 500 million suns — also unexpectedly massive
- Redshift: z = 14.32 — a new record for spectroscopically confirmed redshift
