Lucia Varga, a 19-year-old Hungarian ranked 87th in the world, defeated world number one Iga Świątek 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 in a three-hour US Open final that had the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd on its feet throughout. Varga became the lowest-ranked player to win a Grand Slam title since the Open Era began.
The Match
Varga's serve-and-volley style — almost extinct in modern women's tennis — consistently disrupted Świątek's baseline rhythm. She saved four match points in the deciding tiebreak before closing it out on her first championship point.
"I don't think it has hit me yet. I just kept telling myself: one point at a time. That's it. One point at a time," said Varga through tears at the trophy presentation.
