A New Spending Benchmark
NATO leaders concluded their annual summit with an agreement to raise the collective defence spending target from 2% to 2.5% of GDP, the highest benchmark in the alliance's history. The move comes amid heightened tensions along NATO's eastern flank.
Who Is Spending More
Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, and Romania announced immediate budget increases, with Poland committing to reach 4% of GDP by 2026 — the highest of any alliance member.
"The security environment demands that we invest in our own defence. We cannot rely on allies alone," said Poland's Defence Minister.
Rift Over Strategy
Not all members are aligned. Several Western European nations pushed back, arguing that diplomacy and development aid should accompany military investment. The summit communiqué attempts to balance both approaches with a new "defence and dialogue" framework.
