A New Global Commitment
After two weeks of intensive negotiations in Geneva, representatives from 140 countries signed a joint declaration pledging to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent below 2019 levels by 2035.
Key Commitments
- Phase-out of new coal power plants by 2030 in developed economies.
- A $100 billion annual climate finance fund for developing nations.
- Mandatory annual emissions reporting to an independent UN body from 2026.
- A pledge to halt deforestation of primary forests by 2028.
"Half a loaf is better than none. Getting China and India to even acknowledge these targets is progress," said the UN Secretary-General.
