In one of the most shocking moments in recent Oscar history, "The Quiet Valley" — a dialogue-driven drama made for $4 million and distributed by a boutique streaming platform — won the Academy Award for Best Picture, defeating six heavily favoured studio productions including a $250 million sci-fi epic.
The Film
"The Quiet Valley" follows three generations of a rural Appalachian family over 48 hours as they confront economic displacement and family fracture. Shot in 22 days with a cast of largely unknown actors, it earned its Oscar campaign on the strength of a viral Sundance screening and unanimous critical praise.
"We made this film because the story needed telling. Not for an Oscar. But here we are," said director Elena Vasquez, visibly overwhelmed as she accepted the award.
